Introduction to examples of homologous structures :
The organs which are similar in structure and origin but dissimilar in function are called homologous organs and this phenomenon is called homology.
Examples of Homologous Organs from Plants and Animals
1. Thorns of bougainvillea and tendrils of cucurbita: The thorns of bougainvillea differ from the tendril of cucurbita in its function but both arise in axillary position as modified branches.
2.Pericarp: The wall of the ovary in flowering plants after fertilization of the ovules become modified in different ways to help in seed dispersal because wing like expansion for wind dispersal in maple ,fibrous and spongy in coconut for water dispersal and succulent in mango for animal dispersal.
3.Vertebrate fore limbs: The forelimbs of vertebrates such as seal, bird,bat ,horse man etc afford a good example for homologous organs. This could help us on hexagon shape
4.Insect mouth parts: In all the insects mouth parts include a labrum, a pair of mandibles, and 2 pairs of maxillae and these help in feeding.
